IB Program overview

The International Baccalureate (IB) program, administered by the Intertnational Baccalaureate Organization in Geneva, is a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum with an international focus for grades 11 and 12. The Montgomery IB curriculum consists of six subject areas:

  • Language A (English)
  • Language B (Second Languages)
  • Individuals and Society
  • Experimental Science
  • Math
  • The Arts

Courses are offered at the Standard Level (1-2 year class) and Higher Level (2-year class). Students who successfully pass examinations in each subject area will receive Certificates and may earn advanced placement college credit. IB Diplomas require:

  • Certificates in 3 Higher and 3 Standard Level courses
  • The Theory of Knowledge course
  • 150 hours of extra-curricular community service
  • The completion of a 3500 word Extended Essay.

Enrollment in IB classes requires instructor approval, based on prior achievement, commitment, and ability in the subject. In general, the IB students seek the challenge of an intellectually rigorous curriculum, seek in-depth study in areas of their interest, and are prepared to function effectively at the college level. Standards are outlined in the individual course descriptions.

Students may participate in the complete diploma program, or they may take individual IB classes as certificate candidates. “Pre-IB” students in grades 9 and 10 take university pathway courses to prepare for the IB program. We welcome the participation of new students in our program, and parent involvement is encouraged through our IB parent group.

Regarding any questions, please contact our IB coordinator, Dorothy Battenfeld, at 528-5522 ext. 6506 or dbattenfeld@srcs.k12.ca.us for information.
